4,444 gallons of untreated wastewater spill into tributary near Ocean Isle Beach

OCEAN ISLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Brunswick County Public Utilities announced about 4,444 gallons of untreated wastewater were discharged and reached a tributary to Saw Pit Swamp.

BCPU said it came from a force main isolation valve failure near 6576 Summerfield Pl. in Ocean Isle Beach on Friday, January 9th.

The sanitary overflow was discovered around 11:57 a.m., staff repaired the valve around 12:15 p.m. after investigating the site and determining the source was valve leakage and the repair was completed on 1:10 p.m. on Friday.

Downstream sampling and remediation of the affected site has been completed.

BCPU says no action is required from the public at this time. Anyone with questions is asked to contact the Collection Systems Superintendent, Cliff Phipps at 910-253-2657.
