UNCW hosts event to celebrate National Girls & Women in Sports Day
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — For the first time ever UNCW’s Department of Athletics is celebrating national girls and women in sports day by giving back to the community.
UNCW coaches and student athletes put on an event for girls in first through 8th grade. They kicked off the evening with a girl power chant then began warm ups. Several stations were set up by coaches and student athletes for the girls to practice whatever sport they love the most.
From golf, to soccer, basketball, softball, volleyball, cheerleading and basketball, there was a lot to chose from.
It’s an event UNCW Softball Coach Kristy Norton said is important not only to celebrate women athletes, but to also show the younger generation they can do anything they set their minds to.
“I mean just important to get a female face out there and say hey, you know, if a guy can do it females can too. So just getting them active in the community. Understanding that this is an avenue that they are welcome in and hopefully that they pick up on a sport they might fall in love with,” Norton said.
Although national girls and women in sports day was officially on Wednesday, the athletics department thought it was only appropriate to host the event leading into the UNCW women’s basketball game against the College of Charleston.
