5 set comeback leads Hoggard volleyball to the MEC title

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)-It looked like the Hoggard High School volleyball team was in trouble on Wednesday night down two sets to none, but it didn’t faze the Vikings. They rallied off three straight set wins to pull out the five set victory over rival Ashley, (15-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-20, 15-12).

It was Martin-Maine Wrangell leading the offensive attack once again for Hoggard in the win. The junior finished with 19 kills, while Ayla Johnson finished with 14 of her own.

The loss didn’t hurt Ashley’s playoff chances. The Screaming Eagles received the No. 8 seed in the Class 4A State tournament. They will receive a first round bye before taking on the winner of No.9 Broughton and No.24 Pine Forest.

The conference championship secured the Hoggard Vikings a top seed in the playoffs. Hoggard was named the No.2 seed in the eastern side of the bracket. They will receive a bye as well, taking on the winner of No.15 Middle Creek and #18 Fuquay- Varina in round two.
