5th Quarter Team of the Week: Hoggard Vikings

WILMINGTON,NC (WWAY)–The Hoggard Vikings came out last Friday night and played their most complete game of the season taking down the Laney Buccaneers in MEC play 28-7. The win earned the Vikings the 5th Quarter Team of the Week.

“These guys have just continued to work and they just keep getting better,”said Viking head coach Craig Underwood.

Hoggard started their 2019 season in a unfamiliar position losing their first two games by a wide margin, but since then things have begun to click. Their win over Laney last Friday night improved their conference record to 3-1, winning four out of their last five games.

“It was rough from the beginning this season,”says Hoggard junior Issa Baggett. “Now, we are progressing and were getting where we want to be slowly.”

Their progression this season is something that the coaching staff saw coming. It was just getting the players to buy in long enough for them to see the changes.

“I am pleased with them being able to trust the process and stick with it,”said Underwood. “Now, hopefully we can make a push right here at the end of the year.”

At one point during the season the Vikings were without 9 of their 22 starters from the beginning of the year due to injury. That number also included not a single captain being on the field. So, it was up to the younger players on the team to step into the lime light head on.

“It took a lot of encouragement to them from us upperclassman,”said Hoggard senior Patrick Tootoo. “We had to constantly remind them just keep their heads up and it will get better.”

Friday night will bring yet another tough task for Craig Underwood and his team. The Vikings will welcome in the North Brunswick Scorpions in one of the top match ups Friday in the Cape Fear.

“This is the toughest North Brunswick team I have seen in a long time,”says Underwood. “I have a lot of respect for coach Davis and what he’s done there in a short time. We got our hands full, we got to show up.”

The Vikings and Scorpions will kickoff at 7:00 p.m. on Friday night from Scott Braswell Stadium in Wilmington. That will be one of the many games we will have Friday night on the 5th Quarter.
