63-acre property under contract for retail center in Leland

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — A 63-acre property on Highway 17 in Leland is under contract with a development firm out of Charleston South Carolina.

Twin Rivers Capital is in the process of purchasing the property on 17 in between Ocean Gate Plaza and Ploof Road.

North Brunswick Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Dana Fisher said Leland is officially booming with development.

“Every time I turn around it’s like there is something new coming,” Fisher said.

Several commercial developments are already in the construction phase like Aldi and Tropical Smoothie.

“I think it’s exciting,” Beverly Ramirez said. “There is a lot more to do down here. Wilmington is great, but it’s just so congested.”

Development Partner Doug Horack with Twin Rivers Capital said Leland is underserved in retail and they hope to bring some national retailers to Highway 17.

“I would love to see a steak house, a home supply store like Lowe’s or Home Depot, some clothing stores that would be for not teenagers,” Fisher said.”

Beverly Ramirez has some similar ideas.

“More restaurants, just more diversity. You know anything clothing, shopping, not really a whole mall but just some little specialty shops,” Ramirez said.

Until the dotted line is signed, Horack said the possibilities for that space are endless. He said there has been some discussion about a movie theater, office space and other retailers, but they have no idea yet what will actually be coming.

Horack said they hope to start construction at the end of 2017 or beginning of 2018.
