65 trees to be planted at GLOW academy

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — On Saturday, the Alliance for Cape Fear Trees says they’ll be planting 65 trees at Girls Leadership Academy of Wilmington.
The project, supported by the Cape Fear Garden Club, supports both environmental health and educational equity.
According to the press release, greener schools are linked to stronger academic outcomes, green campuses support healthy lungs, and trees help kids manage stress and support cognitive health.
“We believe that every student deserves to grow under the protection and beauty of shade,” said Isabelle Shepherd, ACFT Executive Director. “By increasing access to tree canopy and green space, we’re directly investing in the well-being and success of the students at GLOW.”
There will be variety of native oaks, tulip poplar, hornbeam, and serviceberry planted.
“The reintroduction of native plant species is critical to supporting our local biome, and this mix will create a multi-layered canopy,” says Sheri Chisholm, a horticulturalist, licensed NC landscape contractor, and landscape designer. “The tree canopy provided by the oaks in the parking area will help to minimize the effects of the urban heat island, while the mixed border of hornbeam, serviceberry, and tulip poplar in the rear will attract pollinators and support local wildlife. Altogether, this planting helps stitch ecological health back into a developed landscape.”
