911 call says hunter shot soldier at Fort Bragg

FORT BRAGG, NC (AP) — A recording of a 911 call shows a Montana soldier killed on a recreational trail at Fort Bragg was accidentally shot by a hunter.

Multiple media outlets report that a recording of the call, made to Hoke County Emergency Communications, was from a man who identified himself as a hunter. The man said he was hunting at the base along with a friend, and that the friend accidentally shot 33-year-old Capt. Jeremiah Sipes of Belgrade, Mont.

Hunting is allowed in parts of the post during hunting season. Sipes was killed on New Year’s Day, the last day of deer season.

Army criminal investigators have not ruled the death a hunting accident, but said they are considering it a possibility.
