CFPUA warns of phone scam targeting customers
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Cape Fear Public Utility Authority is warning of a phone scam targeting customers.
CFPUA spokesman Mike McGill says an elderly customer reported he was the target of the scam, which has been reported to local law enforcement and the Attorney General’s Office.
The customer said a week ago he got a call from someone representing the “City of Wilmington Water Department” asking for help completing a survey that asked about personal information. The customer participated. Yesterday, the customer was informed he had been selected to receive a $1,000 prize based on his participation in the survey, and that they would personally deliver the prize to his home between 5 and 6 p.m. today.
There is no “City of Wilmington Water Department.” Wilmington and New Hanover County combined their water and sewer service to create CFPUA in 2008. McGill says CFPUA is not conducting a customer survey at this time. He says even if the utility does a customer survey, it never offers a cash prize.
