Pleasure Island prepping for possible storm
NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Town leaders at Carolina and Kure beaches are taking steps to prepare for this weekend’s storm forecast.
Carolina Beach Assistant Town Manager Ed Parvin said crews in the town are already taking steps ahead of this weekend. He said they’re making preps at Freeman Park, which remains open at this time, and other steps to be proactive.
“Keeping all of our ponds pumped down, making sure Carolina Beach Lake is at its lowest possible level, and monitoring our beaches,” Parvin said. “We’ve been taking down lifeguard stands.”
Officials are also in talks with New Hanover County Emergency Management. Kure Beach town leaders also met briefly to discuss storm plans this afternoon.
Debra Strickland said areas like Canal Drive in Carolina Beach has seen it all.
“We had a couple come up to the restaurant the other day in a canoe because it was flooded,” Strickland said.
She added that even though a storm could bring heavy rains and rip currents, it will be business as usual on Pleasure Island. Other locals said it’s a perfect time to have a hurricane party.
Town leaders are urging no matter what happens in the storm’s track, people should monitor conditions and roads for flooding.
