Heavy rain brings more flooding to troubled spot

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Heavy rain is creating a mess for the southeastern part of Brunswick county.

Some streets are still closed while some homeowners are dealing with excessive flooding. Heavy rain and strong wind are not what Tom Luckey put on the itinerary for a family vacation in Sunset Beach.

“We had about a foot of water in the street here,” Luckey said.

Luckey said they come every year in October.

“It’s usually beautiful,” Luckey said. “We’re on the beach.”

This year, they are inside.

“We bunked down sat inside and played games and watched the weather and just watched the event outside,” Luckey said.

He said this event did not rain on their parade though.

“Just being with family is enough,” Luckey said.

Meanwhile in Carolina Shores, front yards and roads are underwater.

“I’ve never seen anything like this since we’ve been down here eight years,” homeowner Gary Hertling said.

Hertling said the whole street is dealing with water.

“There has got to be about 20 houses that are underwater,” Hertling said. “You know have taken water into their first level. The ditches are overflowing. The big ditches are overflowing.”

The water is also overflowing onto the road.

“The water is a foot deep at the other end of the road,” Hertling said. “Some car came down like 30 miles an hour and he just hit it.”

Hertling said the car made it out, but the department of transportation recommends avoiding this kind of standing water. The homeowners and visitors hope the standing water makes its way out soon.
