RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A report from the General Assembly’s watchdog organization says the supplemental insurance North Carolina state agencies offer their workers lacks sufficient oversight and results in wasteful employee and taxpayer spending.

The Program Evaluation Division presented lawmakers a study Wednesday that recommended more central management of these policies.

The report focused on 46 agencies and universities that offer life, dental and disability insurance among other policies with premiums deducted from pay that’s already been taxed. This is separate from a pre-tax program the state human resources office offers workers.

The study found more than 400 employees enrolled in two dental plans costing $1,000 a year and two disability insurance plans that offer short-term benefits that combined would offer more than a covered worker’s salary.
