5 things to know about mosquito protection and prevention

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY)- The rain may have passed, but many are now dealing with high mosquito populations due to large amounts of standing water.

Here are five things you need to know about protecting yourself from mosquitoes and preventing infestations.

  1. Mosquitoes complete their life cycle in water.  Mosquitoes lay eggs in standing water like ponds and puddles, and only emerge as adults. Check around your home for standing water, and if possible, dump it. This includes buckets, bowls, and other man-made containers. Mosquitoes can even lay eggs in containers as small as bottle caps.
  2. Clean out ditches of debris to allow drainage and prevent another source of standing water. Mosquitoes do not lay eggs in running water, so keep ditch water flowing.
  3. Research is important. Make sure all repellents and products are EPA approved. Read labels carefully, and make sure to follow all instructions carefully.
  4. A product that are particularly useful is Permethrin 10%. This can be purchased at a local hardware store and is a barrier treatment spray for around your yard. New Hanover County Vector control uses Biomist 30/30 as their mosquito spray which contains permethrin and is used in their ultra low volume sprayers (ULV).
  5. Lightly colored long-sleeved clothing can help prevent mosquito bites. Long-sleeve shirts and long pants can provide extra protection, while lighter colored clothing can make mosquitoes more visible when landing on people, making them easier to swat.
