Carolina Beach prepares to host first-ever Cranksgiving food collection competition
CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — As Thanksgiving approaches, Carolina Beach is buzzing with excitement for a novel event on the horizon—Cranksgiving. Kelsey Viscount from the Carolina Beach Bar Club joined the Good Morning Carolina team to provide a sneak peek into the unique blend of cycling and scavenger hunts, all aimed at supporting a great cause.
Cranksgiving has its roots in an alley cat-style cycling race for bike messengers in New York City around 30 years ago. Over the years, it has evolved into a nationwide phenomenon, combining a bike ride, scavenger hunt, and food drive to support local soup kitchens. According to Viscount, this year marks the first-ever occurrence of Cranksgiving in Carolina Beach.
The event kicks off with participants registering at Good Hops Brewing starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The race commences at 1:30 p.m., where cyclists will embark on a journey around the island, picking up non-perishable items, completing scavenger hunt tasks, and visiting checkpoints. The twist lies in the fact that participants need to strategically manage their time, as various activities contribute to time deductions. The fastest team, factoring in these deductions, emerges victorious.
While participation is free, participants are encouraged to allocate around $20 for purchasing non-perishable items at local stores. All the collected items will contribute to supporting Martha’s Kitchen in Carolina Beach. E-bikes are allowed to compete.
Viscount explained the scoring system, highlighting that the first team back may not necessarily be the winner. Time deductions earned at checkpoints and through completing tasks play a crucial role in determining the final rankings. Even the last team to return can secure a high placement with significant time deductions.
The charitable spirit extends beyond the race itself. Upon returning to Good Hops, participants will have the opportunity to engage with non-profits like Three-Wheel Therapy, providing adaptive tricycles for those with mobility challenges, and Special Pedals, involved in job placement for neurodiverse individuals and creating bicycle art.
Cranksgiving promises a fun atmosphere with live music, unique items from Special Pedals, and the renowned craft beer from Good Hops Brewing.
For those eager to be part of this inaugural event, Viscount says to arrive at 1 p.m., bring your bike, friends, and a bag, and get ready to ride. If the event proves successful, it holds the promise of becoming an annual tradition.
