Prince remembered locally; StarNews writer shares unique encounter
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Prince’s music impacted fans all over the world, including those here in the Cape Fear.
The pop star was found dead in his home earlier today.
We spoke to StarNews Features Editor John Staton about the impact that Prince had as an artist.
“To me the great artists are their own person, you know, you hear George Harrison play a note and you know it sounds like him,” Staton said. “You hear Prince, you hear one line of the song, and you know it’s Prince. And he was a true artist and no, there’s no one else like him. There will never be anyone else like him.”
Staton once heard the pop star play at a club called Plum Crazy in Raleigh in the 1990s.
“No one would confirm he was going on, but there was some kind of commotion, and some guys running around with lanyards,” Staton said. “So we said, ‘Oh, well, maybe it’s true.’ And then he came out at like 2 a.m., played just straight up funk. No hits, just jams for like two hours.”
