Lightning safety PSA released for deaf and hard of hearing community

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) —  Summer means more people spending more time outside. But it’s important to keep your eye to the sky when we have a chance for storms especially during this time of the year.

You’ve probably heard of the slogan “When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!” Now, a new lightning slogan as been implemented for the deaf and hard of hearing community, “See a Flash, Dash Inside!”

“It’s the summer time,” NWS Meteorologist Sandy LaCorte said. “You’re playing sports, at the beach, at the pool so it’s really important for people to take shelter when there is lightning in the area.”

People can be struck at any time of year but most lightning occurs during the summer.

LaCorte says it’s extremely important to make sure everyone stays safe.

“Lightning can strike up to 10 miles ahead of a thunderstorm so you may not always hear the thunder, but if you see lightning you are close enough to get struck by it,” LaCorte said.

Not everyone can hear thunder which is why the National Weather Service recently released a PSA for the deaf and hard of hearing community in addition to a new slogan and sign.

There have already been at least 6 fatalities in 2016 so far in the US, where all 6 people were taking part in outdoor activities.
