Preparations for colder temperatures in the week ahead
CAPE FEAR REGION (WWAY) — Some of the coldest air the Cape Fear has seen in more than a year will be moving in this week.
Officials are encouraging people to stay warm. Later in the week, we are going to find ourselves dealing with temperatures closer to the freezing mark or even below.
The City of Whiteville’s Emergency Services Director Hal Lowder said there are a few ways to keep you and your home warm.
He said one of the biggest things to look out for as temperatures drop, is each other.
“Check on your neighbors. Ya know, if you’ve got elderly neighbors, we don’t know if they’re doing ok or if their heat is on. Check on them as well,” Lowder said.
He said if you have gas heat in your home, make sure your carbon monoxide detector is working properly.
Brunswick County Resident Mallory Booth said when talking about carbon monoxide, it serves as a good reminder for people with garages as well.
“Just being cognizant about where you’re starting your car, making sure to not start it under a carport in order to be safe,” Booth said.
Lowder said frozen pipes are another concern. He recommended insulating any exposed pipes and turning on faucets to maintain a constant drip throughout the night. He said another easy tip is to keep your sink cabinets open. This will allow heat to reach your pipes.
Pet owners also need to be on alert as the temperatures fall.
“Just don’t keep them outside. Keep them inside or in a garage. If you do have to keep them outside, keep them in a doghouse with a bunch of blankets,” Pet Owner, Julie Utt, said.
Utt said her and her two dogs will be inside with limited trips outside, at least until it warms up a little bit.
