UNCW baseball defeats Kent St. 8-3; wins series 2-1

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It was opening week for UNCW Baseball at Brooks Field where the Seahawks took on Kent State in a three game series.
The series was split 1-1 coming into Sunday, and Kent State would take the early lead up 3-1 in early innings. UNCW started slow at bat, but things would change come the 8th inning. The Seahawks would score 5 runs in the 8th inning with help from Trevor Marsh, Tanner Thach and Bromley Thompson. Despite a loss on Saturday that evened the series, outfielder Trevor Marsh said they knew exactly what they needed to do to take care of business.
“Going based off of yesterday, we just flushed it. We were just like, know what we gotta do, so that and we scored multiple runs. I think we were literally just passing it down, passing it down, passing it down. We’d have one quiet at bat, then the next guy would go up there a little confident, another quiet at bat and I think that was really big for us,” Marsh said.
Freshman pitcher Connor Marshburn made his collegiate debut (1-0) and struck out two, while allowing just one hit over 2.2 innings in relief.
The Seahawks begin the season with a 2-1 record, they will travel to play nationally ranked Coastal Carolina on February 20th.
