THIS WEEKEND: Moores Creek National Battlefield commemorating 248th battle anniversary
CURRIE, NC (WWAY) — Happening this weekend, Moores Creek National Battlefield is holding two days of events to commemorate the 248th anniversary of the Battle of Moores Creek Bridge. Jason Collins, Chief of Interpretation at Moores Creek, joined the Good Morning Carolina crew to talk about what’s happening this weekend.
“The Battle of Moores Creek Bridge was February 27, 1776, and the battle was actually the first decisive Patriot victory of the American Revolution,” Collins said. “The battle actually put North Carolina on the road to independence and it gave our delegates to the Continental Congress confidence to seek out a vote for independence.”
Park staff, volunteers, and other living historians will offer a variety of programs and demonstrations throughout the weekend. It begins with a wreath-laying ceremony at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.
“These patriotic organizations are paying tribute to the soldiers on both sides who fought and in several cases died on that battlefield to commemorate the importance of the battle, and kind of set the scene for the weekend,” Collins said.
There will be battle commemoration programs at 12:00 and 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, and at 1:00 and 3:30 on Sunday. The Tryon Palace Fife and Drum Corps will perform on Saturday, and the Wilmington Police Pipes and Drums will play on Sunday.
There will also be 18th century toys and games, blacksmithing, candle-making, loyalist and patriot programs, guest speakers, and more. The 2nd Division Marine Corps Band will also be performing on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
“It’s a great way to kind of get a feel for 1776 in a relatively short amount of time,” Collins said.
