Town of Oak Island seeking beach renourishment

OAK ISLAND, NC (WWAY)– Four years following the wrath of Hurricane Isaias in Brunswick County, one of its beaches is in dire need of sand replenishment.

The west end of Oak Island needs sand as a result of the erosion from that storm, and other storms following.

The town is in the process of securing a beach renourisment project to ideally begin this winter, for approximately 9 miles of the beach from McGlamery Street to the west end parking lot.

The town is looking at mining a sand bar that’s about 14 miles south of the island as the primary source for material.

This is because the sediment identified in this offshore source is high quality sand, compatible in size with the native beach and has desirable color when compared to closer sources. This source meets all state criteria, according to the town.

This project is in very early stages of a study, and nothing is yet confirmed.
