WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Cape Fear Public Utility Authority has received funding mentioned by President Joe Biden on Thursday for work on its service line program to keep drinking water safe.

According to CFPUA, their long-standing corrosion control program is effective in helping to prevent lead in older plumbing fixtures from getting into drinking water. They have also secured $4.16 million in bipartisan infrastructure funding for their efforts in getting a head-start on the EPA’s new regulations for lead.

CFPUA Executive Director Kenneth Waldroup said he’s looking forward to helping solve as many issues as possible for customers.

“We’re solving multiple issues at once. We’ve had a very successful long running corrosion control program to prevent exposure to the led. But we’re now going to bring those led pieces completely out of the surface system,” Waldroup said.

CFPUA is nearing the completion of inventorying all of its 70,000 water service lines and say as of today; no lead service lines have been found in their system but there have been lead goose-neck connectors.
