124th U.S. Open returns to Pinehurst
The championship’s return will mark the first time in over a century the USGA has awarded four Opens to a single site in a span of 25 years.
PINEHURST, N.C. (WWAY) – For the first time in a decade, the U.S. Open returns to Pinehurst #2.
“Pinehurst is special in so many ways,” said John Bodenhamer the Chief Championships Officer with the USGA. “I think it’s the history. For architect Donald Ross, this was his masterpiece.”
More than creating history, the tournament creates economic movement.
“For the state of North Carolina, it’s about a $500 million impact,” said Bodenhamer to ABC11 about the economic impact of hosting this tournament. “For this community, about $200-250 million. In this immediate community. That’s huge for businesses. It brings a lot of folks here; it lifts up a lot of business and we’re very proud of that.”
Since the course is now an “anchor site”, it will host the prestigious tournament every five or six years through 2060. The next is in 2029. The championship kicks off June 13th.
