What you must do before taking any donations, supplies to Western NC

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Hundreds of organizations across North Carolina are gathering donations for the western part of the state to help after Helene, but North Carolina Emergency Management has an important reminder before anyone tries to take donations into the affected areas.

The North Carolina Chamber of Commerce says if you plan to move people, resources, or equipment into Western North Carolina, you must coordinate plans and movement through the Business Emergency Operations Center.

If you want to donate time, money, resources, or supplies please work with one of our partners on the ground to speed up and maximize the effectiveness of your support. Please do not email the BEOC as it slows down the process of us getting help to people who need it. You can find a list of partners and contact information here.

Emergency officials say you should not self deploy without first contacting the NC Business Emergency Operations Center or there is a high chance you will be turned away at various checkpoints.

The NC Business Emergency Operations Center (BEOC) will be able to direct resources to appropriate designated staging areas that are staffed and equipped to receive these donations.

Please include the following information:

What are you moving? Why you need special access.

When do you plan to move and from where?

Where are you going?

When will they arrive at the “border to Western NC” and where?

Until further notice, roads in Western NC are closed to all traffic other than emergency services and pre-approved shipments coordinated through the BEOC.
