Parking changes announced by Carolina Beach Town Council

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Carolina Beach Town Council has implemented new parking regulations.

Earlier this month, the council decided to eliminate residential parking passes primarily in oceanfront lots. This significant decision was influenced by the potential loss of federal funding related to a beach nourishment project.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is providing funding for the more than $20 million project, deemed essential by the town following a challenging storm season. However, the Army Corps’ interpretation of the regulations requires that Carolina Beach offer equal access and equal payment options for both residents and non-residents.

Town Manager Bruce Oakley emphasized that this is an ongoing discussion. He stated, “We are going to evaluate our parking program as soon as the season’s over, make recommendations to council… see if there is any way we can find additional lots where residents can use near the beach… and at the same time we will be talking with the Corps of Engineers to try and find a solution that will allow for residential passes on these lots… closer to the beach. We are always looking for a solution. The town council wants to take care of its citizens and visitors, but we really feel like they pay their fair share with taxes and other fees.”

Despite the changes, parking passes are still accepted in street-side lots and downtown lots, and employee passes will continue to be allowed. Notably, paid parking enforcement in previous years has typically ceased on October 31st.
