UNCW men’s basketball breaks record for points in a game

Seahawks ran past Mount Olive 143-91

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) – What a way to start the regular season for the Seahawks.

UNCW had eight players in double figures, eight players with at least one assist (32 total on 53 made field goals), and four made at least three 3-point shots. Coach Siddle said he couldn’t ask much more on the offensive end, and the one thing he wanted was to make sure his unit got their confidence up.

“We always talk about trying to get a team shot,” said head coach Takayo Siddle after the school record 143 points on Monday against Mount Olive in Trask Coliseum. “I thought the guys did that tonight. Just trying to get them to grow in their confidence.”

UNCW exploded out to a 10-0 lead that seemed to set the tone for how the game was going to go.

It was a big contrast from the Seahawk’s exhibition last Wednesday, in which they scored 77 against Fayetteville State. UNCW shot 2-19 from deep in that matchup. Granted, the pace of the two contests were completely different.

“The change of pace helped us,” said Siddle. “The shot types were different. We got stuck up in the exhibition game because we weren’t moving the ball or moving our bodies. So, we focused on that in practice. I thought we got better looks and we were able to knock them down.”

“The group is talented to score the basketball. We know the chemistry part of it is growing… It’s going to take some time. Tonight, we took a step forward with that.”

Forward Noah Ross scored a career high 19 points on 8-9 from the field. Guard Donovan Newby added three triples and was a game high +54. Transfer Bo Montgomery shined off the bench with his game-high 25 minutes, tallying 22 points in his official Trask opener. A Montgomery jumper with 7:10 left in the game broke the school record for team points to make it 127-71.

Regardless, Siddle says he was not completely satisfied.

“The main thing is getting our guys to focus for 40 minutes, and I don’t think we necessarily did that tonight.”

We will see the Seahawks next on Friday, when they welcome in Georgia Southern to Trask Coliseum.
