Students take a stand against bullying

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — October is National Bullying Prevention Month and one middle school in New Hanover County is giving students a fun way to bring awareness to bullying.

“This week is definitely going to be helping a lot of kids understand that bullying isn’t right,” Student Kaleb Moses said.

Noble Middle School is teaching their students the importance of working together to prevent bullying from happening.

“We believe having these discussions with our students at Noble will empower them to stay strong and stay together, do the right thing, learn to be kind and compassionate citizens in our school and obviously outside in their day to day life,” school counselor Megan Demolina said.

Students like Moses are taking this week seriously. This 7th grader said you shouldn’t be scared to let someone know if you are being bullied.

“You just got to inform your teachers that you are being bullied or that there is a bully around because that’s going to be the easiest way to get rid of that bully,” Moses said.

This week is helping students learn how to handle difficult situations.

According to the National Bullying Prevention Center more than 1 out of every 5 students report being bullied.

“I’ve experience bullying and I’ve witnessed it, so to know that we are dedicating a whole week to NAB week about Noble Against Bullying, it’s very touching, like it’s good,” student Samaya Black said.

Online bullying is another issue because social media is a popular way to reach others.

“When they go to apply for a job or college or university a lot of times those employers or universities will look at those Facebook accounts and see what kind of character they have. So what you put out there on social media never really goes away,” assistant principal Sarah Buchanan said.

Even though this is only for the week many hope it carries out for the entire school year.
