DAGESTAN (AP) — Russian volunteers have rescued a ginger cat from Russia’s Dagestan that spent almost seven years on the grave of its owner, an old man who died in 2018.

Since the man died, the male feline settled on the grave and has not left.

A few attempts to give him a new home failed as he kept returning to the cemetery.

After years of vagabond life, the cat’s health deteriorated and he now suffers from several illnesses, the local volunteers who took him to a clinic, said.

Veterinarians named him Hachiko after a famous dog from the iconic Hachi: A Dog’s Tale movie.

Hachiko is receiving treatment at a clinic in Dagestan’s capital Makhachkala.

After his recovery in a few months, Hachiko will be transported to Saint-Petersburg where animal activists are looking for a new family to welcome him.

It’s unlikely he will be able to come back to the graveyard thousands of miles away.
