Shelter still accepting people, conditions continue to worsen

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — People continue to flock to the shelter at North Brunswick High School. The shelter did start seeing water leaking in the cafeteria from a clogged drain.

They lost power in their main building, but they have a generator running in a different room for people with special health needs. Volunteers have stepped up and even saved lives.

“No, he was having a seizure. So I yelled for Gabe. Gabe rushed over and hit some pressure points because he’s in military. I ran and got a nurse. It seemed like EMS was outside the door,” said Donna Starling, who lives down the street and has been trying to help out with as much as possible as the shelter.

The shelter lost power in their main building, but they have a generator in a smaller building to keep house people who have oxygen tanks and other special health needs.

“We’ve had five people that need daily dialysis, that we’ve just been trying to keep calm, keep fed, keep water. We have three people on oxygen. The electric went out. We had to make sure their oxygen is good. One thing after another really,” said Gabriel Wong, who was evacuated from his own home in Shallotte.

The Red Cross says they expect dozens of more people to come Sunday, but the conditions on the road leading to the shelter are getting drastically worse.
Old Fayetteville Road, which leads to the school, is falling apart because of major flooding.
