BY THE NUMBERS: FEMA gives more than $80M to Cape Fear storm victims

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Since Hurricane Florence, residents across the Cape Fear have received more than $80 million of state and federal funding.

According to FEMA, Brunswick County has received more than $23.6 million, more than $38 million in New Hanover, and more than $20 million in Pender County.

Brunswick County

  • As of Oct. 20, more than $6.2 million in state and federal grants have gone to more than 1,650 homeowners and renters.
  •  As of Oct. 17, more than 900 flood insurance claims have been filed. An estimated $6.3 million in claims have been paid to date.
  • As of Oct. 19, more than $11 million in U.S. Small Business Administration low-interest disaster loans have been approved for 294 homeowners and renters and 25 businesses.

    Individual Assistance:

  • As of Oct. 19, nearly 6,200 home inspections have been issued.
    • Nearly 99 percent of home inspections have been completed.
    • 24 inspections have an “inaccessible” status. This is the number of applicants who had an initial meeting with an inspector who determined the dwelling was inaccessible. These applicants need to contact FEMA to reschedule an inspection when their homes are accessible.

      Transitional Sheltering Assistance:
    • Current number of households checked in: 24

      Disaster Survivor Assistance (DSA):
    • DSA has had more than 3,200 interactions with survivors.
    • As of Oct. 20, there is one DSA crew working in Brunswick County.
  • Brunswick County has been approved for FEMA Direct Temporary Housing Assistance. Travel trailers and manufactured housing units may be provided for eligible applicants.
  • The Disaster Recovery Center for Brunswick County is located at the Virginia Williams Event Center, Odell Williamson Auditorium at 150 College Road NE, in Bolivia, and is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday. It opened on Sept. 29 and has assisted 961 visitors.

    Public Assistance:
  • Brunswick County was approved for assistance to local governments for debris removal and emergency protective measures on Sept. 14, and for categories C – G Oct. 12.
  • An applicant briefing was held Oct. 15.

Pender County:

  • More than $9.2 million in state and federal grants to nearly 1,900 homeowners and
    renters.
  •  More than $2.8 million in claims paid to more than 1,000 National Flood Insurance
    Program policyholders.
  • More than $8.2 million in U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) low-interest
    disaster loans approved for 142 homeowners and renters and five businesses.

    Individual Assistance:
  • 5,631 home inspections issued
  • 90 percent of home inspections complete
  • 490 inspections have an “Inaccessible” status. This is the number of applicants who
    had an initial meeting with an inspector who determined that the dwelling is
    inaccessible. These applicants need to contact FEMA to reschedule an inspection
    when their homes are accessible.

    Disaster Survivor Assistance (DSA):

    • DSA has made 942 interactions with survivors.
    • As of Oct. 4, there are 2 DSA crews working in Pender County.
  • A Mobile Registration Intake Center opened at 801 S. Walker St., Burgaw, N.C. in
    Pender County on Sept. 28 and is tentatively slated to close Oct. 6.
  • A Mobile Disaster Recovery Center was located at Caswell Presbyterian Church, 318
    W Church St. in Atkinson (Pender County) from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 4.
  • A longer-term Disaster Recovery Center site for the county will open soon

New Hanover County:

  • More than $9.4 million of the more than $38 million in state and federal grants have gone to more than 3,700 homeowners and renters.
  • More than 1,300 flood insurance claims have been filed. An estimated $10 million in claims have been paid to date.
  • As of Oct. 15, more than $18.8 million in U.S. Small Business Administration low-interest disaster loans have been approved for 521 homeowners and renters and 43 businesses.

    Individual Assistance:
  •  As of Oct. 19, more than 12,000 home inspections have been issued.
    •  Nearly 99 percent of home inspections have been completed.
    • Forty-six inspections have an “inaccessible” status. This is the number of applicants who had an initial meeting with an inspector who determined the dwelling was inaccessible. These applicants need to contact FEMA to reschedule an inspection when their homes are accessible.

     Transitional Sheltering Assistance:

  • Current number of households checked in: 93
  • Disaster Survivor Assistance (DSA)
    •  DSA has had more than 17,200 interactions with survivors.
    • As of Oct. 20, there are three DSA crews working in New Hanover County.
  • New Hanover County has been approved for FEMA Direct Temporary Housing Assistance.
    Travel trailers and manufactured housing units may be provided for eligible applicants.

The Disaster Recovery Center for New Hanover County is located at Independence Mall, 3500 Oleander Drive, Wilmington, and is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday. It opened on Sept. 28 and has assisted 2,853 visitors.

     Public Assistance:

  •  New Hanover County was approved for assistance to local governments for debris removal and emergency protective measures on Sept. 14, and for categories C-G on Oct. 12.
  • As of Oct. 20, 11 Requests for Public Assistance have been received and three approved.
  • An applicant briefing was held Oct.18.
