WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) — The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office says the family of a man who died on his first day on the job needs your help.

Detention Officer Aaron “AJ” Shipman was sworn in at 9 a.m. on July 21, 2025. The Sheriff’s Office says Shipman experienced a medical emergency about two hours later, and died.
Since the death was unexpected, the Sheriff’s Office says the family needs help with funeral expenses.
The Sheriff’s Office says you can make a donation directly to:

S&L Funeral Home

Fair Bluff, NC

(Please note that the donation is for Aaron Shipman)

The funeral service will be held on Friday, August 1, at 1 p.m. at West Columbus High School. Following the service, a burial will take place at Butler Branch Cemetery.
The Sheriff’s Office says donations are needed by Wednesday, and every contribution – no matter the size – makes a difference.
