WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A judge sentenced a man to at least 41 years in prison for shooting at police near UNCW.

A jury found Edwin Vaughan, 70, guilty of Attempted Murder, two counts of Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer with a Firearm, one count of Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill, three counts of Discharging a Firearm into an Occupied Vehicle in Operation and several related misdemeanor offenses.

Wilmington police came to the corner of college road and Randall parkway around 10-30 on the morning of January 26, 2024, after a caller complained about Vaughan panhandling on the median.

Vaughan threatened police multiple times, before pointing his gun at a deputy at the BP station on College Road.

Vaughan then fired five times at a sergeant arriving in his patrol car.

The sergeant fired twice as Vaughn tried to run away, and Vaughan fell down.

He was not injured and was arrested.

Vaughan had pointed a gun at an officer at the same intersection three years earlier.
