Southport Historic Preservation Commission holds special meeting as residents give feedback
SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — The Southport Historic Preservation Commission held a special meeting Friday afternoon about a proposed historic district for the city.
In July, the Commission presented a 200-page document to the city’s board of aldermen, which proposed designs for the district.
Since then, there have been workshops, and Friday was another chance for residents to provide feedback about the design.
Some people supported the changes the commission made, while others said the changes amounted to governmental overreach.
Commission chair Charles Drew appreciated the feedback.
“Any time you have a historic preservation district or overlay zone, there’s going to be regulations in that district that’s going to be to try and protect and preserve and promote those historic homes or historic structures that are in that,” Drew said. “And there’s going to be people that’s gonna have some distaste about that.”
The Board of Aldermen hasn’t voted on any design for a historic district.
Drew said he’s not sure when they will.
