Brunswick Co. commissioners approve agreement between Navassa PD and county sheriff
NAVASSA, NC (WWAY-TV) — The Brunswick County board of commissioners approved an agreement between the Navassa police department and Brunswick County sheriff’s office.
Since May, the town has been without a police department, marking the second time in recent years Navassa has operated without a full time officer. Since then, Brunswick County deputies have handled patrol in the town as town leaders decide next steps.
The board signed an interlocal agreement earlier this month, it allows the sheriff’s department to authorize outside employment and assign deputy sheriff’s for patrol and traffic duties.
According to the agreement, only off-duty deputies who volunteer their time will participate and they will be scheduled 20 hours per week. The agreement could result in unfulfilled coverage due to sheriff demands and available volunteers. Participating deputies will be paid at a rate of $40 per hour the town will pay the county over $1,267 per quarter for equipment use.
The agreement will expire next June. WWAY reached out to the town for comment and we have not heard back
