HAMPSTEAD, N.C. (WWAY) — Topsail head football coach Chris Schmidt has resigned from his position after one season.

The Pirates were the only area team to not qualify for the playoffs, which begin this Friday. They are also the only club to not win a game in 2025.

After a narrow 42-40 loss in their opening game, Topsail was outscored 325-66 over their last nine contests.

Pender County Schools provided WWAY with the following statement:

“Topsail High School head football coach Chris Schmidt has resigned from his position after one season with the program. We appreciate Coach Schmidt’s dedication and commitment to our student-athletes during his time at Topsail. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to lead the program and for the relationships he built with student-athletes and families.

The search for a new head football coach will begin immediately. Topsail High School remains committed to supporting our student-athletes and continuing to build a strong and competitive football program.

No further comments will be made at this time as the hiring process moves forward.”
