Wilmington warming shelters fill up as cold air nears

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY-TV) —  Some warming shelters are filling up ahead of Monday night’s cold air. The Good Shepherd Center in Wilmington is expecting at least 100 people without permanent housing, including veterans and families with children.

With the ongoing federal shutdown and the loss of SNAP benefits, Katrina Knight, the center’s executive director said they have more people needing food and other who need a roof over their head during challenging weather conditions.

“Whether it’s a particularly hot day or in this case a cold snap that we are experiencing, they don’t have to agree to stay with us forever or for even a week or a month but if we can help quite literally, weather this difficult situation,” Knight said.

Knight encourages anyone in need of a hot meal, shower or place to stay to come by. The Good Shepherd is located at 811 Martin Street in Wilmington.
