Federal scientists testing Wilmington-area goose for avian flu

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY-TV) – Federal scientists are confirming whether a Canadian goose from the Wilmington area was found positive with the avian flu.

The bird was found in a small pond behind a local residence. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission said testing could take two to five weeks for a final result. The avian flu is highly contagious among birds. While the risk is low, the virus can spread from animals to humans.

Christ Turner, a wildlife health supervisor for the commission said area residents should keep an eye out if multiple dead birds are found in one place.

“If you’re finding multiple sick and dead birds at one time, it never hurts to make a phone call, because it certainly would be suspicious from a disease standpoint,” Turner said.

Turner adds that when disposing of a dead bird, do not make direct contact. He also advises people wear rubber gloves, use a trash bag to pick up the bird and wash any clothes worn around the animal.
