Modular Classrooms being added to Brunswick County School
BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY)– The Brunswick County Board of Education is planning to expand Union Elementary School next year, by installing modular classes like the ones at Leland Middle School.
Union Elementary already has four modular units, with twenty students per unit, but with student enrollment rising, the county plans to add a one-unit modular with six rooms.
Larry Smith, Executive Director of Operations for Brunswick County Schools, says the modular classrooms are great for relocating them when needed. It can also be negative for students who are going to class.
“The negative part for us is that they have to go from outside, and then inside for other school amenities. The cafeteria, the gym, the media center, all of that must be traveled with the weather going back outside. They also don’t feel as quite as inclusive,” said Smith.
A referendum bond of around 350 million will appear on the November third midterm election ballot in 2026. If passed, Brunswick County plans to use the funds to build a new elementary school, among other improvements and expansions.
