City of Wilmington urges drivers to stay off roads as crews clear snow, prioritize emergency routes

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — With snow on the ground and hazardous driving conditions across the City of Wilmington, the city is urging residents to stay off the roads unless travel is absolutely necessary.
The city says limiting driving helps Public Works crews focus on clearing primary routes and allows first responders to work safely and efficiently.
The city said plowing operations are being prioritized to ensure critical public safety facilities remain accessible, including hospitals, fire stations and the police station. After those locations are addressed, crews will move to collector and arterial streets.
The city said the effort is being complemented by the North Carolina Department of Transportation, which is focusing on major corridors that run through Wilmington, including U.S. 421, U.S. 74/76, U.S. 117 and U.S. 17. NC 133 is also among the routes being prioritized.
