NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover Sheriff’s Office Animal Services Unit helped reunite a family with their dog who was lost for years.

The Alaskan Malamute was brought to the shelter and was said to be found wandering the streets.

The dog was scanned for a microchip, the microchip company was contacted and learned his name is Denali.

Staff called the registered owner to let them know they have 9-year-old Denali.

The owner cried, according to the sheriff’s office, and asked if he was okay.

It was discovered that Denali had been missing for about five years. The family lived in Onslow County but since moved to Ohio.

There were indications that someone had been caring for Denali, so he was placed on a stray hold to await potential owner claims.

No one claimed Denali but the family expressed they wanted to reunite with him if no one else did.

On Friday, the family drove from Ohio to claim Denali.

In a social media post, the New Hanover Sheriff’s Office Animal Services Unit said, ” What a heartwarming and joyful moment for this family to be together again, all thanks to the simple act of keeping the microchip up-to-date with the original owner’s contact information.”
