WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Cape Fear Community College is expanding its Bridge to Independence Program, aimed at helping adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities prepare for greater independence and meaningful employment.

College officials said the program is designed to support participants as they identify personal strengths, explore career options and develop employability skills, while also continuing academic instruction in reading, math and computer literacy.

CFCC said through hands-on learning and individualized support, students gain practical experience in career exploration, resume development, interview preparation and workplace readiness.

“Bridge to Independence is about creating real opportunities,” said Erin Easton, vice president of economic and workforce development and continuing technical education at CFCC. “We’re supporting individuals with disabilities as they work toward independence, while also partnering with employers to build workplaces that benefit the entire community.”

CFCC said the college partners with local businesses to promote inclusive hiring practices, provide training and resources for employers and support successful job or volunteer placements.

Program offerings include career exploration to help participants discover paths aligned with their interests and strengths, career preparation through hands-on training and interview coaching, academic skills development in reading, writing, math and computer literacy, and job placement support that matches students with appropriate opportunities.
