UPDATE: Pembroke man in custody after allegedly stealing vehicles, prompting lockdown

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A Pembroke man was arrested after allegedly stealing multiple vehicles prompting schools to lockdown.

Monday evening around 5:42 p.m., the Bladenboro Police Department conducted a traffic stop. During the stop, they say, the suspect stole the patrol vehicle.

Bladen County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to be on the lookout for the suspect who was last seen traveling in the direction of Center Road. Deputies quickly located the unoccupied vehicle on Marsh Road near the Robeson County line.

Drones were deployed looking for the suspect, but they were unable to locate him after hours of searching. They continued to patrol the area throughout the night.

Tuesday around 9:15 in the morning, Bladen County 911 Center received a report of a stolen vehicle from the area of Hester Mill Road. Then, an anonymous call came in that they followed the suspect, and they were currently at Champs Gas Station on Highway 41. The caller stated that he had drug the suspect out of the car and the suspect ran away.

Bladen Community College, West Bladen High School, Dublin Primary, Homestead School, and Dublin First Baptist were placed on lockdown.

Deputies began canvasing the area and citizens reported sightings of the suspect which helped the deputies track him through the woods behind Bladen Community College.

32-year-old Katrale Sampson of Pembroke was taken into custody around 10:30 a.m. near Highway 410 outside of Dublin.

Sampson is charged with larceny of motor vehicle, larceny by employee, and resisting public officer by the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office. He is also charged with AWDW on Government Officer, Larceny of motor vehicle, possession of heroin, felony larceny, resisting a public officer, misdemeanor larceny, and possession of drug paraphernalia by Bladenboro Police Department.

He is currently being held in the Bladen County Detention Center with no bond.

West Bladen High School, Bladen Community College, Dublin Primary, Homestead and Dublin Baptist Church were on lockdown due to a man who stole a vehicle in the Bladenboro area.

As of 10:30 a.m. the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office said they took him into custody.

Prior to being taken into custody he was described as wearing all black with facial tattoos and traveling on foot.
