WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Millions of Muslims around the world are welcoming the beginning of Ramadan, the holiest month of the Islamic calendar.

Also, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, Ramadan, is the month where the God Allah prescribed fasting.

From dawn to sunset, observant Muslims fast the entire month—giving up things such as food and drink—to practice self-control, restraining themselves from desire.

Through prayer and fasting, Ramadan offers a spiritual reset—a chance to reflect, refresh, and realign one’s life.

Ibrahim Abdallah with the Wilmington Islamic Learning Center says fasting is important for two main reasons.

“Number one, spiritually, it is the command of God, because we Muslims, the believers, when the Lord of God command, we say we hear, and we obey. Even physically, in the body, you know, to rid of cholesterol and the fat, and all of that,” said Abdallah.

Ramadan is the time to prove to your body that you can restrain and control your urges.
