New Red Cross data shows Gen Z leads volunteer numbers in NC

RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) — New data released by the American Red Cross shows a multigenerational volunteer base across North Carolina, with younger adults making up the largest share of participants.
The organization said nearly 6,600 volunteers serve in its North Carolina region. Based on demographic estimates shared by most Red Cross volunteers nationwide, Generation Z accounts for 42% of volunteers, making it the fastest-growing and largest group. The growth is attributed in part to student-led Red Cross clubs.
Millennials make up about 24% of volunteers, followed by Baby Boomers at 18% and Generation X at 9%. The Silent Generation represents 7% of volunteers, according to the data.
Allison Taylor, regional executive of the American Red Cross in North Carolina, said the figures reflect continued interest in volunteer service across age groups.
March is recognized as Red Cross Month, a nationwide observance that began during World War II to encourage support for humanitarian efforts. The organization uses the month to highlight volunteer work and promote opportunities to give blood, take safety classes and make financial donations.
Red Cross Month will conclude with Red Cross Giving Day on March 25, which focuses on raising funds for disaster relief efforts.
