Wilmington 5K race aims to raise awareness and funds for Parkinson’s disease

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A community 5K race is planned for May 9 to raise awareness and support for individuals living with Parkinson’s disease in Wilmington.
The “Beat It 5K,” organized by nonprofit Beat Parkinson’s Today in partnership with Brunches, will take place at The Pointe at Barclay, 2030 Stonecrop Drive. The event includes a professionally timed 5K race and a one-mile walk, and participants of all fitness levels are invited to join.
Registration opens at 7 a.m., with the 5K starting at 8 a.m. and the one-mile walk beginning at 8:05 a.m. Awards are scheduled for around 9 a.m., followed by a post-race celebration at Brunches at The Pointe. Participants will receive a $10 coupon to the restaurant. Parking is available at The Pointe.
Proceeds from the event will support programs that aim to improve the quality of life for people living with Parkinson’s in the Wilmington area. Organizers also hope the event will highlight the benefits of exercise and community support in managing the disease.
Beat Parkinson’s Today provides free exercise classes for individuals with Parkinson’s, held at 10 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2250 Shipyard Blvd.
