WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Cape Fear Public Utility Authority (CFPUA) will begin scheduled water system maintenance Tuesday evening that will impact approximately 200 customers in downtown Wilmington, including a precautionary boil water advisory and possible temporary water outages.

Work is set to begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, as crews replace broken valves in the water distribution system. Utility officials say the maintenance is part of routine system upkeep designed to ensure the continued reliability of water service and allow crews to isolate sections of the system during repairs or emergencies.

Areas affected include portions of South Front Street, Ann Street, Nunn Street, South Second Street, Church Street, Surry Street, Castle Street, and South Third Street.

CFPUA says customers in the impacted zones may experience periods of low pressure or temporary water outages while work is underway. Because reduced pressure can increase the risk of contamination entering the system, a precautionary boil water advisory will be issued for affected customers.

Under the advisory, residents are instructed to boil tap water for one minute before cooling it for consumption or use bottled water as an alternative. The guidance applies to drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, making ice, washing food, and pet use. Officials note that boiling is not necessary for bathing or showering.

Once repairs are completed, CFPUA laboratory staff will conduct water quality testing. The advisory will be lifted only after results confirm the water is safe to drink.
