New Hanover County Schools launches free summer meals to-go program for youth

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover County Schools has announced a free summer meal initiative aimed at helping children and teens stay nourished while school is out.
The district’s SUN Meals To-Go program will provide weekly meal packs throughout the summer, offering a convenient option for families seeking consistent access to nutritious food. The program is part of a nationwide effort through the United States Department of Agriculture to support child nutrition outside the school year.
Open to all children and teens ages 18 and under — regardless of school enrollment or household income — the program also extends eligibility to individuals over 18 with disabilities who are enrolled in a public school program.
Each registered participant will receive a weekly meal pack containing five days’ worth of breakfasts and lunches, including milk. According to the district, menus will rotate on a two-week cycle.
Families must complete an online order form by May 8, 2026, to participate.
Meal distributions will take place weekly on Thursdays from noon to 7 p.m., beginning June 18 and continuing through August 6. Pickups will be held at Holly Shelter Middle School.
A parent or guardian listed on the pre-order form must pick up the meals, though children do not need to be present. District officials note that meal boxes may weigh 15 pounds or more and include perishable items requiring refrigeration or freezing.
In addition to the meal program, families may qualify for grocery assistance through the USDA’s Sun Bucks initiative, which provides a one-time $120 benefit per eligible child. Additional information is available through the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
School officials say the program reflects the district’s commitment to student health and academic readiness year-round, ensuring that children continue to receive reliable nutrition even when classes are not in session.
More information, including the required order form, is available through the district’s child nutrition website.
