Southbound U.S. 17 Traffic in Hampstead to shift onto new lanes May 28

HAMPSTEAD, NC (WWAY) — Drivers traveling through Hampstead will see a new traffic pattern beginning next week as construction continues on the Hampstead Bypass project in Pender County.
Starting the evening of May 28, both southbound lanes of U.S. 17 near Leeward Lane will permanently shift onto newly constructed lanes. Traffic will then reconnect with the existing U.S. 17 roadway near Vista Lane to continue through Hampstead.
Northbound traffic will remain in its current pattern.
Officials say southbound drivers needing access to Transfer Station Road should plan to use alternate routes during the traffic shift.
Motorists are also encouraged to slow down and use caution while traveling through the work zone.
The Hampstead Bypass project is designed to improve traffic flow and connectivity along the U.S. 17 corridor. The first segment of the bypass — stretching from N.C. 210 to Sloop Point Loop Road — is expected to open in late 2027.
