WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY NEWS) — A major downtown infrastructure project is beginning this week that will bring long-term improvements to traffic flow, safety, and stormwater drainage in Whiteville, according to the City of Whiteville.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) will lead the work, which includes construction of a new roundabout at the intersection of Madison, Franklin, and Lee Streets, as well as significant underground stormwater system upgrades.

While city officials acknowledge the project will cause temporary disruptions, they say the improvements are intended to modernize aging infrastructure and reduce flooding and congestion issues in the downtown area.

Construction will take place in phases over the coming months. From June 23 through July 7, northbound and southbound Franklin Street will be closed within the project area. Roads are expected to briefly reopen from July 8 through July 13, providing full access through the intersection while crews transition between phases of work.

Beginning July 13 and continuing through October 11, more extensive closures will be in place. During this phase, northbound Lee Street, both directions of Madison Street, and southbound Franklin Street will be closed within the project limits.

Despite the construction activity, city officials emphasize that all downtown businesses will remain open and accessible throughout the duration of the project. Access will be maintained at all times, and drivers will be able to use Frazier Street and Caldis Street to reach Madison Street and nearby businesses.

The city is encouraging residents and visitors to continue supporting local shops, restaurants, and services while construction is underway.
