Surf City, Topsail Beach launch summer traffic management program to ease island congestion

SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) — As summer tourism reaches its peak along the coast, Surf City and Topsail Beach are partnering on a new traffic management initiative aimed at improving traffic flow, enhancing public safety, and ensuring emergency vehicle access during the busiest travel periods of the season.
Beginning Saturday, June 27, traffic management personnel will be stationed at key intersections along N.C. 50 and N.C. 210, corridors that frequently experience heavy congestion as residents and visitors travel to and from Topsail Island.
Town officials said the program is designed to actively manage traffic during peak travel times, particularly on weekends and major holidays, while collecting data that could help shape future transportation improvements.
The initiative will operate on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the summer, with expanded coverage planned during major holiday weekends, including the Fourth of July.
Traffic management personnel will work alongside local government staff and emergency responders to monitor traffic conditions, report incidents, and help improve vehicle movement through some of the area’s most heavily traveled intersections.
Officials said maintaining reliable access for emergency vehicles is a key goal of the program.
“As a coastal community and a popular summer destination, we understand that increased traffic is a natural part of our seasonal success,” Surf City Mayor Teresa B. Batts said in a statement. “This partnership allows us to take proactive steps in seeking to improve traffic flow while gathering valuable information that will help guide future transportation decisions.”
Batts added that collaboration between the two towns will help better serve residents, businesses, and visitors throughout the summer season.
The program represents a joint investment by the two municipalities, with Surf City and Topsail Beach each contributing $30,000 for a total cost of $60,000.
In addition to managing traffic, officials said the effort will provide valuable operational data that can be used to evaluate the program’s effectiveness and identify potential long-term solutions to congestion challenges on and around Topsail Island.
Town leaders plan to monitor traffic conditions and operational results throughout the summer before determining whether similar measures could be used in future years or incorporated into broader transportation planning efforts.
The towns say the initiative reflects a proactive approach to addressing seasonal traffic concerns while supporting the growing number of visitors who travel to the island each summer.
