NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The Cape Fear Public Utility Authority (CFPUA) is asking all customers to voluntarily reduce their water use beginning Thursday, July 9, as prolonged severe drought conditions continue across much of its service area.

The ongoing drought has led to increased water demand, particularly for outdoor irrigation. By conserving water now, customers can help ensure there is an adequate supply for essential community needs, including fire protection, healthcare facilities, and other critical services.

Recommended Outdoor Watering Schedule

CFPUA encourages customers to follow these voluntary irrigation guidelines:

  • No lawn or landscape irrigation on Mondays.
  • Odd-numbered addresses (such as 1001 Main St.) should water only on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
  • Even-numbered addresses (such as 1002 Main St.) should water only on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.

Irrigation Time Restrictions

To maximize efficiency and reduce water loss from evaporation, customers are also encouraged to follow these watering times:

  • Automatic spray irrigation systems: Operate only between midnight and 6 a.m.
  • Hose-end sprinklers: Use only between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. or 6 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Working Together to Conserve Water

While these measures are voluntary, CFPUA encourages all customers to participate in water conservation efforts during the drought. Small changes in outdoor water use can make a significant difference in preserving the region’s water supply until conditions improve.

CFPUA will continue to monitor drought conditions and provide updates as needed. Customers are encouraged to stay informed and help protect the community’s water resources through responsible water use.
