Very hot and humid weather continues for today

(WWAY) — Triple digit arrived in the Cape Fear yesterday and more heat is expected for today.
Very hot high pressure aloft remains in control with a weak surface front fading today. Rain chances will drop for late week as the heat continues to be the main weather story. We anticipate heat indices each afternoon through Saturday to reach 106 to perhaps in spots as high as 111. Today will be very hot and humid with mostly sunny skies and highs around 100. Friday… very hot and humid weather is expected as highs soar into the upper 90s. An isolated afternoon shower or thunderstorm is possible with a mixture of sunshine and clouds. The upcoming weekend brings continued very hot weather Saturday with highs in the upper 90s followed by a weak cold front arriving Sunday and lowering our temps into the lower 90s. Also… there will be an increase in coverage of daily showers and thunderstorms this weekend. The front will shift south of the area by next week helping take a bite out of the high heat and bringing seasonable highs around 90. Widely scattered showers and thunderstorms Monday will diminish to just a slight chance of unsettled weather next Tuesday.
**EXTREME HEAT WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM THIS MORNING TO 8 PM EDT THIS EVENING. Dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 111 expected for Pender, New Hanover, and Brunswick Counties.**
